Love Is Like The Water

Love Is Like The Water

by Lucy Hinton, October 2020

(best hummed to a folk-ish like tune — the tune came to me as I wrote it, I hope you can imagine)

Love is like the water

Changing while staying the same

From steam to fertile pools

To ice and back again

Love is like the water

The clouds will rain their tears

Giving life to the land

Until the skyline clears

Love is like the water

It’s always flowing home

Soft as soft can be

And yet can slice through stone

That’s why an act of kindness

Can pierce deepest of all

Breaking through defences

Reaching through the wall

Love is like the water

It needs a place to go

Doesn’t know division;

And dearly longs to flow

Love is like the water

It’s what has brought us here

It is the source of life

And an antidote to fear

Love is like the water

It can drown and it can save

It can shipwreck me asunder

Or carry me on its wave

Love is like the water

Taking many shapes

It wears a thousand faces

Tears, icicles and lakes

Love is like the water

It knows how to rebel

Defying brittle walls

Busting out of hell

Love is like the water

Shapeshifting and wise

A liquid strand of weaving

A thread that never dies

It’s general and specific

It’s everywhere and here

It’s you and me forever

And will never disappear

Love is like the water

It’s the finest place to dwell

For you it fills my heart

A deep and holy well

Whatever face it’s wearing

Lovers, or close friends

My soul will always love you

For true love never ends

Love is like the water

Changing while staying the same

Bearing memories of eons

And will never forget your name

Some times it is a spring of joy

Some times a vale of sorrow

For I can not forget you

Not today and nor tomorrow

Love is like the water

If it’s locked away

It will only rise up stronger

So wiser to let it stay

Love is like the water

Source of life and joy

It is the sacred constant

Impossible to destroy

So let us honour water

And the river of love that flows

Between you and I forever

No matter where we go

I’d like to build a boat

That we can sail to find

Each other when we wish to

And what’s beautiful and kind

Love is like the water

It can not be owned

Yet it might own me forever

Wherever I may roam

Love is like the water

It will not be denied

Even when we’ve passed and gone

Our love will not have died

I hope you you can forgive me

For my flaws and sins

Baptise me in this water

And let new life begin

If only you will join me

At Anam Cara’s sail

I will forgive your flaws and sins

And goodness will prevail

I’m a wild rose on an island

A difficult rose, I know

A rose you watered once before

With love, some time ago

I will always love you

I miss you every day

I hope you find the ocean

That carries you back some day
